That’s right, he is not technically in the United States. Due to this, the United States does not recognize his country and denies him permission to leave the International lounge at the airport. Of course, Viktor barely understands a word of this.

When his passport does not pass at the Customs desk, he is escorted away by Frank Dixon (Tucci) and is told that while he was in the air, his country fell under military coup and the government has essentially imploded. In the film, Hanks plays Viktor Navorski, who has just landed at JFK Airport in New York from his native homeland in Eastern Europe. It seems more fitting in a September or October slot, away from the summer clutter.

This is the kind of film that you won’t believe is being released at the beginning of the summer movie season.
